The Theology of BBQ: Schisms, Isms and the McRibb Heresy

We have a friend who once got in big trouble with his grandma after writing an article explaining how, since the hunting & spit-roasting of various creatures predates religion,  BBQ is ultimately more important in human history.  What he missed is that BBQ IS a religion in some areas and has at least three major sects:  the Orthodox Friars of Fruitwood Smoke Slow Cooking, the Sainted Sisters of the Sauce is Boss and the somewhat hard to find Vicars of the Vinaigrette Marinade (& Eastern offshoot of the famously violent Dry Rub Rebellion of 1893).  The defining of BBQ can start an argument (or even a fistfight) because (just like traditional wine styles) THESE THINGS MATTER:  it is a culture, patrimony and heritage of someone you are talking about and that does not come in  a bottle from the supermarket.  But, by being a Big Tent house of the Q, we here at PWM are willing to arbitrate if you bring enough samples for lunch and we have also searched the globe to find the perfect wine to fit your BBQ so you (and your Sweet Red Sauce loving Brother in Law) can find an ecumenical summer.

Which of course brings us (finally) to our BBQ red du jour: the 2007 El Portillo Cabernet FROM Beef Country, Argentina.   The land that Vegetarians fear most.  If it moved we grill it!!!  This is big stuff!  Not for the meek sort of thing!  This is for adherents to the Credo Affumato of the holy Conclave of Smoke and Violets, Reformed:  deeeep dark blackberry, ripe cherry fruit with notes of smoke, rose petals, earth and, yes, violets on the nose.  This used to cost twice this price but our distributor lost his way & we were there for the reward.  WANT TO BE ENLIGHTENED!!  How does $6 a bottle by the case grab ya!

The monumental 2001 La Stoppa Stoppa is a 2,000-bottle of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new French oak. It boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals, graphite, plums, creme de cassis, and cherry liqueur. It is fabulously concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of flavor nuances. There is plenty of glycerin in this rich, but neither heavy nor overbearing effort. This is a thrilling tour de force! However, it requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. Bravo!

La Stoppa is an ancient estate with vineyards stretching along the Trebbiola valley, not far from the river Trebbia, in the province of Piacenza. The estate extends over 52 hectares, 30 of which are planted with vines and dominated over by an elegant medieval tower. Over a century ago, the estate’s previous owner planted French varieties, producing both wines of significance, as well as others of curiosity through the addition of Italian styles: Bordeaux, White Bordeaux and Pinòt Noir. In 1973 the estate was acquired by the Pantaleoni family who, within a short space of time, had invested in and restructured the vineyards, as well as renewing the cellar. Today the company is headed by Elena Pantaleoni, with the assistance of winemaker Giulio Armani. The naturally low yields ( due to the average age of the vines and poor soil ) together with the intrinsic quality of the grapes, have made possible the creation of wonderfully characteristic wines, which reflect their vineyards of origin and speak for themselves without the need for excessive reworking in the cellar. This does not mean that no use is made of modern technology or small barrels ; on the contrary. However, these serve to accompany the wine towards its full maturity rather than to falsely modify it in any way.

2003 MONTECALVI 'SUPER TUSCAN' $29.95 BTL./132.00 6-PACK

April 2, 2009 by PWM

WORLD CLASS 95 PT.SUPER TUSCAN!

2003 MONTECALVI

WAS OVER $70 A POP!

$29.95 BTL./$132.00 6-PACK

I have been enjoying the wines from this small estate near Greve since the 1995 vintage.  They were first imported by National Importers Winebow initially priced over $70 a bottle, in 2003 a local Portland importer started directly importing Montecalvi @ 55.00 a bottle.  We have picked up their last 15 cases and can offer it at the unheard of price $132.00 a 6-pack (22.00). The 2003 Montecalvi (90% Sangiovese Grosso, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah) presents a gorgeously ripe, jammy nose along with licorice, cassis, smoke, earthiness, grilled herbs and sweet dark fruit nuances that flow from the glass. Full-bodied and long on the palate, it is a massively structured effort that should drink well to age 20, perhaps longer.  The 2003 is the first vintage of Montecalvi that adds a small percentage of Syrah to the blend. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

High-density vineyards, biodynamic farming and low yields are the hallmarks of the wines of Montecalvi, located in the prestigious Conca d’Oro in Greve. Despite its elegant name Montecalvi is a small, family-run property with a decidedly artisanal approach to working in both the vineyards and the cellar. The estate produces big, concentrated wines with imposing tannic structures that have proven to be extremely ageworthy.
